On today’s show, we will hear from a woman who actually got laid off as a result of her hustle.

Her name is Tela Holcomb, she is a stocks and options trader, investor and serial entrepreneur. In her own words, she’s financially free and living a life she loves!

But, it wasn’t always that way. Like many of us, she had to side hustle, and was dependent on her 9 to 5 to pay the bills. And although she got paid very well it just… her heart wasn’t quite in it.

So in 2009, she started learning about trading stocks. She learned a system of trading and investing that had the potential of replacing her paycheck but didn't require her to be behind a computer 8 hours a day. But then, she lost her job. So she got to focused on replacing that income. On today’s episode, she will share how she traded her 9 to 5 and how you can too.

Charreah K. Jackson joins me in the guest chair today to discuss how to thrive in your career and side hustle (without getting fired). Charreah and I first crossed paths in NYC when we were both recent grads, trying to make our way in the crazy world of media. She was always super supportive of other women, always willing to share her knowledge and resources with me and that’s why I have always routed for her. When you see someone who you knew “back when” it’s truly so inspiring to know how far they’ve come and how much more they are capable of and how they are going to keep taking the world by storm.

Charreah is an international speaker, coach and you may know her best for her role as ESSENCE Senior Editor, empowering the brand's global audience of 13 million. She’s been featured on CNN, The CW, ABC News, Fortune and TIME and if you saw the movie Girls Trip, you definitely saw a cameo of Charreah on the big screen. She’s also earned a Hearst Award in journalism and has interviewed newsmakers such as Vice President Joe Biden, Kerry Washington and Hillary Clinton.

Charreah is the author of Boss Bride: The Powerful Woman's Playbook for Love & Success, which was just released this week. As a certified family life educator and coach, Charreah speaks on tapping into our personal power for success.

On today’s episode, Charreah reveals how her playbook for personal power has informed her champion side hustler life. We’ll get into how she maintains a high profile both personally and professionally, while keeping her job and herself happy.

On today’s episode, Charreah gets into:

  • How to thrive at work without sacrificing your personal goals
  • How to side hustle and not lose your day job
  • How to navigate writing your first book

Up until this year, the last quarter of every year always felt like the most stressful for me. This year is the first year that that's not the case for me. This year, I got better at getting things done, even under pressure. In this episode I’m sharing some of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started out side hustling and what I've learned from them.

It’s important that you understand where I and most successful side hustlers went wrong and what I did to turn it around.

These mistakes could have easily been avoided if I had only known how to create a realistic goals setting system. Now, I've mastered the "less talk, more hustle" approach, and it’s what has gotten me results.

I spend less time thinking and talking about what I'm going to do and more time actually doing it.

I learned to cut out all the fluff that makes you FEEL like you're doing something (to-do lists, buying fancy planners, well organized trello boards) and get down to business.

By making these mistakes, I also learned some key lessons as to why most side hustlers aren’t making the progress they anticipated. You’re probably not accomplishing your goal, because you bit off too much or not taking action because you want everything to be perfect and are afraid of making a mistake.

If you want more guidance on how to actually get things done, consider learning my signature Goal Getter Action Plan. I can show you how to run a side business in 7 hours per week.

In this episode, I break down how you can quit stalling and make moves on your side hustle. Listen through to the end to get more info plus an early bird discount code to my signature Goal Getter Action Plan for just $27.

Today’s REWIND guest is Nailah Ellis-Brown. I first heard about Nailah from my roommates, Nydia and Stefanie at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

They supported her business as part of the MBAs Across America program that they participated in (and you’ll hear more about this in the episode).

I’ve been fascinated by Nailah every since. A Black Woman from Detroit with Jamaican roots, Ellis-Brown has made a name for herself as part of the Detroit manufacturing renaissance. Her distinctive hibiscus Ellis Island Tea, based on a family recipe and bottled in an urban 4,000 square foot plant, has expanded sales into six airports and locations across 12 Midwestern states along with shelf space in regional retailer Meijer, Whole Foods and most recently Sam Club stores.

She’s been named one of the Forbes 30 Under 30, has been featured on MSNBC for a small business makeover, and she’s only getting started.

Her plan was to go to school, work on wall street then quit and be an entrepreneur. But when she realized the student loan hustle, she wanted no parts of it.

On today’s episode, Nailah gets into:

  • How she’s been able to brew and bottle a recipe steeped in family tradition
  • How she went from selling out of her trunk to selling in Sam’s clb
  • Learning the science behind her
  • How she took a leap of faith and started over from scratch
  • How investing in herself and her business led to big rewards in major brand partnership
  • Plus how she’s continuing to grow her brand

On this REWIND edition of Side Hustle Pro, I share my experience "meeting" Michelle Obama, launching the newest cohort of my Podcast Moguls training program, then get into this best of edition of Side Hustle Pro with Myleik Teele.

Myleik has revolutionized the way women address their curly hair needs. As the founder of curlBOX, an exclusive monthly subscription box full of amazing products, she has garnered partnerships with Procter & Gamble, Carol’s Daughter, Walmart, Target, SheaMoisture and more.

Before creating curlBOX, Myleik honed her talents for a decade in public relations, working with brands such as The Grammy Awards, American Idol and Nike, as well as music artists like the late Prince. Now, as the creator of the premier hair sampling box, she has developed a loyal following of savvy women. She is very much like a virtual big sister, dishing out spot on entrepreneurial advice.

We all have our thing that #MyTaughtUs, but one thing I learned from her, is to intentionally put myself in the places and spaces to meet the people I want to connect with. This episode felt more like a heart to heart, an opportunity to really connect with a mentor in my head.

On Today's show, Myleik shares:

  1. What led her to be an entrepreneur

It’s Nicaila here with another special REWIND edition of Side Hustle Pro.

Take a listen to this best of episode with Courtney Sanders. This is one of my favorite episodes because Courtney is so thorough! She is an entrepreneur who started making money online by packaging her expertise in productivity systems and goal achievement and has impacted thousands of people.

But, even though she was starting to make 4 then 5 figures monthly in her business, she didn’t just quit her job. She planned it out, she was prepared and she really set a high standard for herself of what she needed to achieve before she would allow herself to quit.

So Courtney’s episode is one that I came back to many, many times in 2017. I would literally re-listen to it over and over again as I prepared to leave my job. 1) Because it was like talking to a life coach and 2) It was a reminder that I could not just quit impulsively and expect success, I needed to establish a plan.

In this this episode, Courtney breaks down:

  • The inspiration for Think And Grow Chick and when she realized she could help other women think and grow into their best selves
  • How she grew her company into a profitable business
  • How she juggles her side hustle with her full time job
  • Financial wisdom she has learned along the way
  • When she knew it was time to take her side hustle to the next level

It's a special REWIND edition of Side Hustle Pro. Side Hustle Pro is on a brief hiatus in May and I’ll be back in June with fresh new episodes. I can assure you, this is no vacation for me. Behind the scenes I am cooking up something great. In the meantime, I’ll be checking in each week with a quick update at the top of each REWIND episode. So you’ll still here from me.

Now take a listen to this best of episode with Maya Elious. Maya is the first ever coach that I purchased an online course from and I continue to benefit from her teachings. Since this episode, it’s been amazing to watch her evolve even further with her content strategy, placing a particular focus on helping other coaches and consultants to use the power of content to make an impact with their brand.

This is one that I re-listen to when I need to recenter and refocus.

On this episode, Maya shares:

  • Her journey from designing MySpace pages to leaving college to become an entrepreneur
  • How she earns money today as a content strategist and coach
  • Her most simple sales funnel that anyone can replicate
  • The common misconceptions about being a coach or course instructor
  • Her number one pro tip for building an audience that craves your content

Today in the guest chair we have self described accidental entrepreneurs Chioma and Uchenna, the Founders of Cee Cee's Closet NYC. What started with selling cute clutches that were brought back from Nigeria has expanded into a full fledged business incorporating products like headwraps, backpacks, and leather goods.

Being a black-women-owned business to them meant having an opportunity to create highly functional products that tap into their Nigerian cultural heritage and specific needs. This is especially true when you think about their silk-lined headwraps. As two naturalistas, they wanted to remove the step of having to wear a bonnet or silk scarf underneath our headwraps to protect their hair. Therefore, they created a product that addressed that particular need.

Most importantly, Chioma and Uchenna view Cee Cee's Closet NYC as an opportunity to have a positive economic impact on Nigeria. All of their products are made locally in Nigeria. They are making an impact and building a legacy at the same time.

Today in the guest chair we have former Wall Street analyst turned Founder and CEO Melissa Butler. Melissa is a visionary who challenges the standard of beauty through the products, pricing, and ingredients in her brand, The Lip Bar.

You may have come across The Lip Bar since it’s become a celebrity fave shared by the likes of Taraji P. Henson on Instagram and it is now sold in select Target stores. But before there was Target, there was just Melissa and her business partner, squeezed into a tiny bedroom in Brooklyn.

Melissa launched The Lip Bar from her kitchen. She describes her move from stocks and bonds to beauty as a natural one, not because she loved makeup, but because she was frustrated with the beauty industry and ready to create a solution. Not only that, but she was tired of the harsh chemicals in ordinary cosmetics, so she created a vegan and cruelty-free product line.

On today’s show, Melissa shares why she was passionate about disrupting the narrative on beauty and creating a line of cosmetics that are safe and affordable.

Today in the guest chair we have the dynamic Dayna Bolden. Dayna is a Lifestyle blogger and CEO of Bolden Creative Media. You may recognize Dayna’s face from her campaigns with some of our favorite beauty brands. On today’s show, Dayna will share how, by combining her passion for both beauty and fashion, she has built a strong following of engaged millennial women and an amazing social media presence, which led to major brand partnerships. As a seasoned creative director and content creator, Dayna has also captured the attention of major online and print publications, including ESSENCE and FORBES.

One thing to note about Dayna, is that she has taken the blogging world by storm in a relatively short period of time. You’ll learn on the show that although she had started growing her presence before stepping out on her own, it’s when she truly invested in her personal brand that brands started calling her to partner.

She juggled a coveted career at Under Armour for as long as she could while side hustling as a lifestyle influencer, but finally stepped out on her own in 2017.

I can totally relate to Dayna’s journey of going all in on her creative passions and launching a business around her personal brand. Today, we’ll unpack the life and business journey of a lifestyle blogger and entrepreneur.

Today in the guest chair we have the one and only Beth Diana Smith, an interior design KING that side hustled for years before venturing out on her own.

Beth possessed a natural ability for creating functionality, efficiency, and organization from a very young age, so she pursued degrees in business and accounting to satiate her love of processes and business strategy.

After completing her M.B.A., she spent more than a decade in corporate finance in companies such as Johnson & Johnson and Viacom honing her skills in understanding clients, analytics, budgeting, and a keen attention to detail.

During her years in corporate finance Beth was also a homeowner.  It was during that time that she discovered an appreciation of color, pattern, and texture; a love for beautiful things and problem solving; and a passion for interior design. Beth decided to pursue her passion, launch her interior design company and began attending the New York School of Interior Design.

Today, Beth, her work, and her design advice have been featured on TV and in various print and online publications including NBC, HGTV, Vogue.com, EBONY, Design*Sponge, and The New York Times.

Hear all about Beth’s journey on today’s episode.

Today on the show, I am introducing you to my best kept secret: the woman who has taught me to turn my knowledge into a valuable, premium course.

Her name is Danielle Leslie and she founded Culture Add™ Labs to help companies and individuals uncover their Culture Add™ and launch profitable products online. She is also the creator of #CourseFromScratch, an 8-week online intensive that helps people create & launch their profitable & poppin’ online courses.

She has been an online marketer in Silicon Valley for almost 10 years and helped personal brands & influencers, including Guy Kawasaki, earn collectively millions of dollars by launching their online courses.

One of the reasons I wanted to have Danielle on the show is because her framework for course launches addresses our common human tendency to get stuck on the preparation part and delay your launch.

She teaches people like myself to not fall into the trap of creating your course content all before you’re ready to launch and instead, focus on what she calls the 4Cs. She breaks this all down in her masterclass, which you can sign up for at SideHustlePro.co/CourseFromScratch if you are interested.

In my own case, I have wanted to launch a podcast training program for almost a year, and I have been dragging my feet because:

  1. I was overwhelmed with the thought of breaking all of the content down
  2. I knew it was really valuable information that could make people thousands of dollars and thus I knew I would need to charge a premium price point (and I was SCARED to set that premium price point)

I turned to Danielle and with her guidance, I launched my podcast accelerator as an invite only program in February and it’s been an AMAZING experience so far.

What I’ve learned from Danielle is:

  • Focusing on creating a course that truly meets your student’s needs, means creating it with their active feedback, not creating it in a vacuum without their input
  • I’ve also learned that it’s not going to be perfect the first time you do it so you have to get down to business and start, so you can improve.

On today’s episode, Danielle gets into:

  • Her straight line to the cash formula that shatters the most popular course creation narrative
  • The tools she used to do a $20,000 course launch in 60 days with no email list
  • Her MVC method to not overthink your launch and to pre-sell your course
  • How her online course made $25,000 alone in one month on Instagram...and how it has exploded since then.
  • As this episode premieres, Danielle just crossed the $100,000 mark, her first six figure month. And in today’s episode, she breaks down how she’s quickly approaching $1M in revenue this year

If you want to learn how Danielle’s online course made $100,000 in one month alone from Instagram listen to this entire episode, and remember to sign up for her Course From Scratch class at SideHustlePro.co/CourseFromScratch.

Today in the guest chair we have Ade Hassan. Ade is the founder and director of lingerie brand Nubian Skin. Frustrated by the lack of skin-tone choices to go with her ever-expanding wardrobe, Ade decided it was time for a different kind of nude. She knew that there were lots of women out there like her who needed the same thing. Nubian Skin has redefined what "nude" means, offering essentials in different colors with current pieces include bras, underwear, hosiery, and shoes.

When Ade set out to create skin-tone choices that actually matched her skin tone, she had no idea the level of interest she would generate. Today, celebrity-favorite Nubian Skin is stocked in leading stores such as Asos, Nordstroms and she even styled the Queen Bey herself, Beyoncé and dancers for the Formation World Tour as well as the cast of the blockbuster film Hidden Figures.

On today’s episode, Ade shares how she transitioned from a career in finance to creating an impactful and highly sought after brand.

Today in the guest chair, we have Mandela SH Dixon. She is one of the only black women who has navigated the tech space as a VC-backed tech startup founder, global startup ecosystem builder, and VC portfolio services director.

Mandela began her career in Silicon Valley in 2011 as a startup founder backed by Kapor Capital, 500 Startups, and Imagine K12 (acquired by Y Combinator). Thereafter, she led a global entrepreneurial program called Startup Weekend Education (acquired by Techstars) that spanned six continents and empowered thousands of entrepreneurs to launch edtech startups.

Most recently, Mandela worked at venture capital firm Kapor Capital, where she supported the success of over 120 tech startups and launched the Founders' Commitment, a first-of-its kind initiative teaching founders how to bake diversity and inclusion into the DNA of their early stage startups.

To-date, Mandela has shared her frameworks for success on over 65 stages, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google, and Facebook. She has also received several recognitions, including being named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 List, LinkedIn's Top 10 Voices in Venture Capital and Startups, and Medium's Top 10% of Writers. Most recently, Mandela co-founded Founder Gym, an online training center that teaches underrepresented founders how to build successful tech startups (applications for Cohort 2 are now open).

On this episode, we get into:

  • What it was like to walk away from her first company
  • Why it’s so important to her to democratize access to information in Silicon Valley
  • Why there needs to be more transparency among founders
  • How seeing both sides of the table and all aspects of the startup ecosystem has shaped her experience
  • The start of Founder Gym and more!

Today in the guest chair, we have Shellye Archambeau.

Not everyone with entrepreneurial instincts comes up with that million dollar idea. Sometimes, people are better on the execution front. You need that person who can take a vision, turn it into an actual viable business, and grow your company year over year. That’s Shellye’s story.

Shellye is best known for being the Chief Executive Officer of MetricStream, Inc. up  until January 2018. She is somewhat of a legend in Silicon Valley, having grown MetricStream to what it is today. She has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her career. In 2014 she was named one of the 46 Most Important African-Americans In Technology by Business Insider. In September 2015, Shellye was recognized as the 97th most influential business leader in America.

When she’s not busy building software companies or sitting on Fortune 500 boards, Shellye is simply a family oriented, energetic, goal driven foodie.

We can all stand to learn a lot from Shellye about living a full life and being an entrepreneur on our own terms.
