Today in the guest chair is Briana Owens, the Founder of Spiked Spin.

Briana is the perfect example that when you have a vision in your heart it doesn't matter what else exists in the market or what you think the competition might be you have to go after it.

For example, by no means does New York City have a shortage of Fitness classes, but after 5 years of spinning across the city, avid cycling fan Briana decided there was a void—one that she was meant to fill. So, balancing her full-time job in advertising she received her certification in spin and got to work.

Briana wanted to create an experience specifically with women of color in mind. And so—Spiked Spin was born. Spiked Spin classes are packed with a diverse array of young women and men committed to getting their bodies and lives together.

On today's episode, I talk with Briana about how she got started, but also why it’s so important to have a spirit of discernment, a practice of being in tune with what's on your heart and following what's in your soul. We also talk about the importance of checking your ego and proving out your concept, before you take on debt or do things just for show. She is starting her business slow and steady and going about it in a really smart way.

Today in the guest chair, we have Jessica Spaulding, Founder of Harlem Chocolate Factory.

Jessica grew up in a home where sugar was not on the menu in no shape or form. But putting her entrepreneurial skills to the test early on, she struck a deal with her mother: if she could make her own candy, then she would also be allowed to eat it. As a Food Network enthusiast she learned to make all types of chocolate at just 10 years old, a passion that would inspire her to eventually launch Harlem Chocolate Factory.

At Harlem Chocolate Factory, Jessica produces bars and brownies inspired by the rich ethnic heritage of her native Harlem community. Jessica emphasizes quality, handcrafting her products and responsibly sourcing her chocolate.

Now, outsiders discouraged Jessica from starting her own business, saying that there was no money to be made. She was determined, however, and in college decided to take a shot at starting a chocolate company. While she was not successful at first, it encouraged her to take time to learn core business skills, a step that has paid off in the long run. On today’s episode, you’ll learn:

  • How Jessica bounced back from business failure and created success from the ashes
  • The resources and competitions she participated in to buy supplies and make samples
  • How she connected with a mentor that helped her prepare for competitions and think through elements of her business
  • How she found partners that gave her the financial stability to build her dream and take her business to the next level
  • And how she is continuing to develop her business as a young entrepreneur working through challenges and missteps

Today in the guest chair we have Brittany Hennessy.

Brittany is a marketer and the author of INFLUENCER: Building Your Brand in the Age of Social Media. She was the first-ever Senior Director of Influencer Strategy & Talent Partnerships for Hearst Magazines Digital Media, and the co-founder of Carbon.

Before reaching out to Brittany, I read her book and I found it extremely helpful. This year, I found myself on the receiving end of more requests for brand collaborations, partnerships and influencer posts that I ever had before. I used the INFLUENCER book templates to confidently negotiate counter offers or decline opportunities that were not right for my business without burning a bridge. So, as usual, when I discover something useful, I want to share it with you guys.

I think that anyone can benefit from Brittany’s knowledge about influencer marketing. Especially if you have plans to build out and monetize your personal brand or ever work with another brand for any reason, for example having them sponsor an event, a podcast, a blog, or if you are invited to speak on a panel, this will be the episode to consult.

What they thought was just a secret recipe formed out of their love of food and experimentation, has grown into the nationally acclaimed Charleston Gourmet Burger Company.

Their All Natural, Gluten Free Charleston Gourmet Burger Marinade and Gourmet Burger Sauce is currently available in hundreds of retail locations across the country such as Whole Foods Market, Wal-Mart, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Kroger Supermarkets, and The Market at Macy’s.

In today’s episode, we get into how a company that started by accident has grown into a legacy building endeavor.

Today in the guest chair is Catherine Soliz-Rey. Catherine is a Self Transformation Strategist for Women and the founder of the Fiercer Woman brand, where she empowers and motivates women with ways to get past their blocks and become their fiercest selves in life and business.

Fun fact, when I first started my blog back in 2015, Catherine was one of the first people I come across. I came across Catherine when I was starting out in side hustling. I was attracted to her authentic approach to sharing marketing and content creating tips. She is personally someone I have purchased content from and learned from, and I always like sharing some of my best kept secrets with the side hustle pro audience, so I had to have her in the guest chair.

Today, I still look to Catherine for motivation to not let fear of what might go wrong hold me back and just do it.

Catherine has used her marketing expertise to train hundreds of entrepreneurs how to build their brand and do the personal development work necessary to breakthrough. She has done this through online training programs, courses, and live speaking events. Helping women elevate so they can step into their true potential, and live to the fullest is her primary goal.

On today’s episode we get into:

  • How to overcome the mental barriers that keep you stuck and stagnant
  • How to create habits that move the needle
  • How she overcame her rock bottom moment and is now able to inspire other women to step into their greatness

Now, let’s get into it

Today in the guest chair is the one and only, Dr. Joy Harden Bradford. Dr. Joy Harden Bradford is a Licensed Psychologist, Speaker, and the host of the wildly popular mental health podcast, Therapy for Black Girls. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Xavier University of Louisiana, her Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from Arkansas State, and her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Georgia.

Her work focuses on making mental health topics more relevant and accessible for Black
women and she specializes in creating spaces for Black women to have fuller and healthier
relationships with themselves and others.

She has been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, Bustle, Huffington Post, Black Enterprise, Women’s Health, BuzzFeed, Teen Vogue, and Essence. This episode is so important to me because I am passionate about breaking the stigma of mental health. Like any other part of our body, we need to take care of our mind. And as Founders, sometimes we think what we are experiencing is unique to us, so we go through a lot of internal torment trying to figure things out on our own. As I talk about with Dr. Joy, sometimes I have felt like, I don’t need to speak to anyone, it’s not that serious. But on today’s episode we get into:

  • Why you shouldn’t wait to reach a breaking point before seeking support
  • The truth about self care and why you can’t “self-care” yourself into not going to therapy
  • What self sabotage looks like and how to overcome it
  • How to thrive as a black founder

As a reminder, this episode is in no way a substitute to seeking help from a licensed therapist in your state.

Today in the guest chair is Angelica Nwandu. Angelica is the founder of The Shade Room, a media company that covers celebrity news and celebrates black culture. With over 14 million followers on Instagram alone, The Shade Room has become the it-destination for breaking national stories. Angelica herself was named as one of the Forbes "30 under 30" in 2016 and has created an empire that inspired Refinery 29 to dub her "the Oprah of our generation.”

Angelica, as you’ll hear on the episode, is someone who is so fascinating to me, because she didn’t have a blueprint. But her confidence is contagious. She may not have known for sure that what she would create would work, but something inside of her made her believe it would work. That’s the kind of confidence we all need to have.

On today’s episode, we’ll get into:

  • How Angelica got her start
  • How her foster care upbringing influenced her life’s path
  • And how she revolutionized celebrity news starting with a laptop, wifi, and an Instagram account

Today in the guest chair we have Advanced sales funnel strategist and business success coach Kim McCarter. I’m very excited about this episode because it is more of a workshop coaching training style episode than my usual q&as. Kim and I really go deep on funnels and I’m asking her all the questions that I genuinely have myself.

I didn’t even know what a sales funnel was when I first set up my email list. But, as I grow as a business woman, I’m learning how to cultivate a relationship with my email list, and that’s something Kim knows all about.

Described as "THE sales funnel strategist and gospel truth on business", Kim's advanced funnel strategies have helped clients clarify their message, build a relationship with their audience and earn multi six figures. She’s also the self described funnel trap queen and is living proof that it’s never too late to make your dreams a reality. She uses her experience to empower other women to live & be their authentic selves.

On today’s episode, we discuss:

  • Why every business that wants to make money needs to understand sales funnels and email marketing
  • How to set up your first simple sales funnel
  • How to get clear on who you want to work with
  • How to figure out what you want to sell and so much more!

Today, I am finally back with another solo episode to share my entrepreneur diaries, how it’s been going, 9 months into entrepreneurship.

True confession, these episodes are the HARDEST for me to do. I feel like I have so much going on in my head and it’s hard to unpack it or know how to unpack it in the way that will be most helpful to others. So I put it off.

Here’s the deal: I have good days, I have bad days, I have days where I feel like I know exactly what I’m doing, where I want to go, and the path I need to take to get there.

On other days, I feel like, I don’t what the hell am I doing. I melt into a ball of sadness and confusion because I feel like, I don’t know what this is all leading me to. I’m just being honest. On those days, I feel like I’m supposed to have it all figured out and I don’t and I’m a disappointment to myself and others.

Clearly, you can see that I’m very hard, too hard on myself.

I’m working on that.

So in this episode, I’m going to share with you what I know right now: What’s worked, what hasn’t worked 9 months in, what i’m still figuring out, and what I’m encouraged by.

I talk about how I’m dealing with loneliness, imposter syndrome, the highs and lows of having my own business, learning to sell my services, and so much more!

Get into it here.

Have you ever been in the airport, walked into a store or restaurant, and wondered who owns it or how that particular store got such prime real estate?

Well, today’s guest will shed light on an industry I personally knew very little about. And I promise you you will never look at an airport news, gift shop, or restaurant the same way again.

Her name is Mary Morgan and she is the President of Morgan Group Ventures, Inc.

Mary entered the airport arena initially as a consultant to the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority which sparked an interest in airport concessions. After five years of management consulting, Mary decided she wanted to focus solely on concessions and obtained her first inline retail location (Pen & Prose Boutique), which she continues to operate today.

Following five years of retail operations, Mary entered a partnership with

HMSHost where she has been able to jointly bid, win and operate food and beverage and

news and gift locations within airports. Today, Mary operates independently and in conjunction with HMSHost multiple locations in National, Dulles and BWI Airports. Mary has also operated concessions in Philadelphia International Airport.

Prior to founding Morgan Group Ventures, Mary worked in Fortune 100 companies providing financial services, strategy, process redesign and information technology services. She is also a CPA and received her BS in Accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University and her MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

Today, Mary shares:

  • The barriers to entry in airport retail
  • The inside scoop on getting your business into an airport
  • The keys to success in airport retailing
  • And more!

Today in the guest chair we have Luam, celebrity choreographer and creative director. Luam has worked with artists and projects such as Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Nike, Rihanna, Kelly, Kanye, Reebok, Janelle Monae, X Factor, American Idol, America's Got Talent, the list goes on. She has obtained cult popularity among the dance community all over the world with her teachings and passion for spreading inspiration.

Funny enough, Luam got her start dancing in the very same dance troupe that I danced with in college at UPenn, African Rhythms Drum and Dance Troupe. Though we were years apart, I relate to her as a creative spirit who finally allowed herself to be led by her soul and her natural talents and calling.

Through her work, teachings and mentoring in the entertainment industry and beyond, Luam works to promote spiritual resilience and resistance and advocates for those overcoming all obstacles to do so.

If there’s one thing I hope you get from this episode, it’s that you can be an artist and still thrive as an entrepreneur. Do not feel pressured to fit into the boxes that life makes you so desperately want to fit into it. Live unboxed.

Today in the guest chair, we have Candice Idehen, the Founder and CEO of York City's Bed of Nails - Nail Bar, an unconventional co-ed salon offering designer nail products, a chic atmosphere and unwavering quality manicures.

Mesmerized by art and beauty since childhood, Candice has utilized her passion and education to not only become a successful freelance celebrity manicurist, but also a driven entrepreneur.

Her business and contracted nail services have been commissioned by the beauty and entertainment's most prestigious brands, from commercial photo shoots to Fashion Week. She’s been featured by some of pop culture’s favorite websites, including ESSENCE, Refinery29, and Harper’s Bazaar.

Candice was also named a Tory Burch Fellows Finalist and Education Program participant.

What I love about Candice is she is not only ambitious but relentless. Once she set her mind to open Bed of Nails, there was no stopping her, and she opened a prime location in bustling and expensive Harlem, New York at the young age of 25.
