Today in the guest chair we have Elsa Isaac. Elsa is an NYC-based fashion and image stylist who believes style is really all about self-expression.

A seasoned pro with over 17 years in the fashion industry, the east African-born stylist has built quite a noteworthy portfolio, having bestowed her stylish magic on everyone from Marie Forleo to Lenny Kravitz; and Katie Couric to Kris Carr. Nowadays, she helps successful career women and entrepreneurs revamp their wardrobes and create show-stopping ensembles that flatter their unique body shape and lifestyles.

A self-dubbed anti-fashion stylist, Elsa doesn’t believe there’s one standard of beauty and strives to empower all her clients to celebrate their own individuality.

Aliyah Jenkins is the Owner and Founder of Body Treats, LLC. Body Treats is an all-natural, organic, chemical and toxin-free skincare line that specializes in pastry inspired (scented) products. Body Treats uses only raw, organic butter, organic oils, and certified therapeutic essential oils.

Working in the healthcare field for eight years as a Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurse, Aliyah noticed a “Revolving Door” cycle with most of her patients.  They continued to come back to the hospital with the same health problems that they initially left with. Aliyah decided that it was time for a different approach and adopted a Holistic lifestyle herself which includes a plant-based diet, physical and mental exercise and the use of herbs as medicine.

While adopting this Holistic Lifestyle, Aliyah was in search of all-natural skincare products that particularly smelled like baked goods and was unsuccessful in finding it, so she decided to make it for herself, right in her kitchen. Through the advice of her sister, she decided to make her personal skincare products into a business.

Meet our new Entrepreneur-In-Residence! Those of you who are longtime listeners may remember that at the beginning of Side Hustle Pro, we had an Entrepreneur-In-Residence by the name of Meiko Drew and we followed her journey for an entire year.

Well, today we are bringing back the Entrepreneur-in-Residence feature. That’s right, starting with this episode, we are going to chronicle the life of an emerging entrepreneur as she launches and scales her business.

This woman happens to be a dear friend of mine, in fact, my best friend since high school, and her name is Lisa Pegram. Now, if it were up to me, I would have had her in the chair a long time ago, but she prefers to grind behind the scenes. But I think she is so dope, and such a hustler, I finally convinced her to do it.

Listen to hear:

  • How she used her education and jobs to develop ideas for several different side hustles
  • The research process she used to launch her cutting edge beauty product
  • Why she uses analytics to drive business decisions

Today in the guest chair we have Andrea Pitter Campbell, Founder and Head Designer of Pantora Bridal, Pantora Mini and the Andrea Campbell Collection. Andrea’s desire to merge typically incompatible components has created an unprecedented perspective on bridal wear.

Andrea took her first step towards fashion at 12 years old, creating the name “Pantora” in preparation for admission to the High School of Fashion Industries. She later graduated and attended the famed Fashion Institute of Technology.

Andrea went the corporate route at first, holding several corporate designer positions as she ran her design business on the side.

In 2013, armed with sharp negotiation skills and sheer determination, she convinced landlords to take a chance on her and was able to open the Pantora Bridal showroom. The road since wasn’t always easy, but Andrea never wavered.

Andrea’s mission to represent the underrepresented in mainstream bridal led the Pantora brand to develop a cult following and be carried by several retailers nationally.

Today we are back with another Side Hustle Spotlight, featuring a woman who is still very much in the side hustle grind or recently left their job to go full time.

Today’s spotlight is Tomara Watkins, the Founder of Loza Tam, an eCommerce brand of satin-lined headwraps that are handcrafted in Ghana by women entrepreneurs.

Tomara (AKA “Tam”) is an eCommerce entrepreneur who has over 10 years of digital marketing experience growth hacking CPG and beauty brands like Bevel, FORM, and Heat Free Hair.

She’s traveled to 10 countries on the continent of Africa so far and as you’ll hear in this episode, it was when Tomara went to Howard University that she fell in love with all things Africa. After traveling to Ghana, the bold prints and colors spoke to her, and she came up with the idea of African print, satin-lined headbands, and head wrap turbans.

Determined to build a business with women, like the women in her family, she ensures that all of Loza Tam’s products are crafted by women entrepreneurs, so they can support their families and continue to plant the same seeds that were planted in her as a young adult.

Tomara has grown Loza Tam to be a six-figure eCommerce brand and she is passionate about supporting and teaching other women how to generate revenue online.

Today in the guest chair we have Zakia Blain, the Founder of FCKbeingFAT (FBF Fitness). With no background in fitness, but plenty of background in every fad diet and weight loss trick around, Zakia simply wanted to inspire others, while helping them lose weight the right way.

Through the creation of her international FBF Weight loss Challenge and FBF Fitness apparel, she has managed to do just that.

While on the journey to expand FBF Fitness, Zakia discovered that her audience was interested in shapewear. So rather than promote another company’s brand, she decided to create her own and, with that, FBF Fitness evolved into FBF Body. The highly sought after shapewear has taken on a cult following of its own, largely in part due to Zakia’s open and honest method of sharing herself actually wearing it and looking amazing while doing so.

In today’s episode, we will learn how she got started, how she works through having a brain disorder to grow her business, and the hard lessons she’s learned along the way about hiring and more. Let’s get right into it.

Today in the guest chair, we have Mrs. Taffi Ayodele the co-founder of Thando’s, a Lagos and NY based fashion company. Thando’s shoes are foldable ballerina flats, giving women a compact and comfortable shoe option that they can easily take with them on the go.

Thando's is the brainchild of Taffi and her husband J.G. They met while pursuing their MBAs at the NYU Stern School of Business. Their love for each other, love for Africa and love for art, inspired the couple to create an innovative footwear line that facilitates a modern woman’s busy lifestyle while supporting African artists.

Thando’s provides a platform for creative talent on the African continent by crowd-sourcing designs from African men and women who would otherwise have limited opportunities to design for a global audience. How amazing is that? That said, it was a lot of work to bring the brand to life.

As Taffi shares in this episode, it wasn’t easy picking up and moving to a continent that she’d never lived on, plus learn to navigate the business in a completely different culture and navigate the highs and lows of that. But Taffi and JG were determined and they have created a remarkable product and are making their footprint across the globe (pun intended).

“Respect your magic” is the mantra she lives by and her goal is to pour into other women and create experiences for them to tap into their very best lives. On today’s episode, we hear how she does it.

Today in the guest chair, we have Katonya Breaux, the founder and President of Unsun Cosmetics, Inc., a Los Angeles-based skin care company specializing in natural sun protection and beauty products for all skin shades and tones.

Katonya herself has worn sunscreen diligently since her twenties. In this episode, she shares why she initially became so diligent with her sunscreen, and how as she matured, she became more health conscious. She realized that even someone with her complexion could get skin cancer. As a result, the idea of sunscreen was no longer just about vanity for her. Protecting her skin meant protecting her life.

On today’s episode, she talks about the tedious process of creating a product that met her own personal high standards and is a natural SPF 30 sunscreen that doesn’t leave the white “residue” that us women with lots of melanin often experience with other SPF brands. As Katonya says, “Everyone should be able to look their best while protecting themselves from the harmful effects of the sun.”

Today in the guest chair we have Kendra Barnes. At the time of this recording, Kendra was an Economist by day and Real Estate Investor by night.

Kendra is now a full-time Real Estate Investor and Founder of The Key Resource. Her real estate investments afforded her the ability to retire from the 9-5 life at the age of 32! She created The Key Resource to inspire, empower and educate people about the power of home ownership and Real Estate investment. She currently owns and manages 4 properties (8 rental units total).

Her key message to anyone looking to buy a home or a rental property is: “You don’t have hit the lottery or be left an inheritance to buy property. You can start with what you have right now. You are worthy of wealth.”

On today’s episode, we get into:

  • What inspired her to get into real estate
  • The mistakes she and her husband made when purchasing their first property
  • The risky move they took to make their down payment
  • The “house hacking” technique that allows you to save a huge amount on your down payment
  • And so much more!
