Today in the guest chair is the one and only, Dr. Joy Harden Bradford. Dr. Joy Harden Bradford is a Licensed Psychologist, Speaker, and the host of the wildly popular mental health podcast, Therapy for Black Girls. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Xavier University of Louisiana, her Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from Arkansas State, and her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Georgia.

Her work focuses on making mental health topics more relevant and accessible for Black
women and she specializes in creating spaces for Black women to have fuller and healthier
relationships with themselves and others.

She has been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, Bustle, Huffington Post, Black Enterprise, Women’s Health, BuzzFeed, Teen Vogue, and Essence. This episode is so important to me because I am passionate about breaking the stigma of mental health. Like any other part of our body, we need to take care of our mind. And as Founders, sometimes we think what we are experiencing is unique to us, so we go through a lot of internal torment trying to figure things out on our own. As I talk about with Dr. Joy, sometimes I have felt like, I don’t need to speak to anyone, it’s not that serious. But on today’s episode we get into:

  • Why you shouldn’t wait to reach a breaking point before seeking support
  • The truth about self care and why you can’t “self-care” yourself into not going to therapy
  • What self sabotage looks like and how to overcome it
  • How to thrive as a black founder

As a reminder, this episode is in no way a substitute to seeking help from a licensed therapist in your state.

Today in the guest chair is Angelica Nwandu. Angelica is the founder of The Shade Room, a media company that covers celebrity news and celebrates black culture. With over 14 million followers on Instagram alone, The Shade Room has become the it-destination for breaking national stories. Angelica herself was named as one of the Forbes "30 under 30" in 2016 and has created an empire that inspired Refinery 29 to dub her "the Oprah of our generation.”

Angelica, as you’ll hear on the episode, is someone who is so fascinating to me, because she didn’t have a blueprint. But her confidence is contagious. She may not have known for sure that what she would create would work, but something inside of her made her believe it would work. That’s the kind of confidence we all need to have.

On today’s episode, we’ll get into:

  • How Angelica got her start
  • How her foster care upbringing influenced her life’s path
  • And how she revolutionized celebrity news starting with a laptop, wifi, and an Instagram account

Today in the guest chair we have Advanced sales funnel strategist and business success coach Kim McCarter. I’m very excited about this episode because it is more of a workshop coaching training style episode than my usual q&as. Kim and I really go deep on funnels and I’m asking her all the questions that I genuinely have myself.

I didn’t even know what a sales funnel was when I first set up my email list. But, as I grow as a business woman, I’m learning how to cultivate a relationship with my email list, and that’s something Kim knows all about.

Described as "THE sales funnel strategist and gospel truth on business", Kim's advanced funnel strategies have helped clients clarify their message, build a relationship with their audience and earn multi six figures. She’s also the self described funnel trap queen and is living proof that it’s never too late to make your dreams a reality. She uses her experience to empower other women to live & be their authentic selves.

On today’s episode, we discuss:

  • Why every business that wants to make money needs to understand sales funnels and email marketing
  • How to set up your first simple sales funnel
  • How to get clear on who you want to work with
  • How to figure out what you want to sell and so much more!

Today, I am finally back with another solo episode to share my entrepreneur diaries, how it’s been going, 9 months into entrepreneurship.

True confession, these episodes are the HARDEST for me to do. I feel like I have so much going on in my head and it’s hard to unpack it or know how to unpack it in the way that will be most helpful to others. So I put it off.

Here’s the deal: I have good days, I have bad days, I have days where I feel like I know exactly what I’m doing, where I want to go, and the path I need to take to get there.

On other days, I feel like, I don’t what the hell am I doing. I melt into a ball of sadness and confusion because I feel like, I don’t know what this is all leading me to. I’m just being honest. On those days, I feel like I’m supposed to have it all figured out and I don’t and I’m a disappointment to myself and others.

Clearly, you can see that I’m very hard, too hard on myself.

I’m working on that.

So in this episode, I’m going to share with you what I know right now: What’s worked, what hasn’t worked 9 months in, what i’m still figuring out, and what I’m encouraged by.

I talk about how I’m dealing with loneliness, imposter syndrome, the highs and lows of having my own business, learning to sell my services, and so much more!

Get into it here.

Have you ever been in the airport, walked into a store or restaurant, and wondered who owns it or how that particular store got such prime real estate?

Well, today’s guest will shed light on an industry I personally knew very little about. And I promise you you will never look at an airport news, gift shop, or restaurant the same way again.

Her name is Mary Morgan and she is the President of Morgan Group Ventures, Inc.

Mary entered the airport arena initially as a consultant to the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority which sparked an interest in airport concessions. After five years of management consulting, Mary decided she wanted to focus solely on concessions and obtained her first inline retail location (Pen & Prose Boutique), which she continues to operate today.

Following five years of retail operations, Mary entered a partnership with

HMSHost where she has been able to jointly bid, win and operate food and beverage and

news and gift locations within airports. Today, Mary operates independently and in conjunction with HMSHost multiple locations in National, Dulles and BWI Airports. Mary has also operated concessions in Philadelphia International Airport.

Prior to founding Morgan Group Ventures, Mary worked in Fortune 100 companies providing financial services, strategy, process redesign and information technology services. She is also a CPA and received her BS in Accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University and her MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

Today, Mary shares:

  • The barriers to entry in airport retail
  • The inside scoop on getting your business into an airport
  • The keys to success in airport retailing
  • And more!

Today in the guest chair we have Luam, celebrity choreographer and creative director. Luam has worked with artists and projects such as Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Nike, Rihanna, Kelly, Kanye, Reebok, Janelle Monae, X Factor, American Idol, America's Got Talent, the list goes on. She has obtained cult popularity among the dance community all over the world with her teachings and passion for spreading inspiration.

Funny enough, Luam got her start dancing in the very same dance troupe that I danced with in college at UPenn, African Rhythms Drum and Dance Troupe. Though we were years apart, I relate to her as a creative spirit who finally allowed herself to be led by her soul and her natural talents and calling.

Through her work, teachings and mentoring in the entertainment industry and beyond, Luam works to promote spiritual resilience and resistance and advocates for those overcoming all obstacles to do so.

If there’s one thing I hope you get from this episode, it’s that you can be an artist and still thrive as an entrepreneur. Do not feel pressured to fit into the boxes that life makes you so desperately want to fit into it. Live unboxed.

On today’s show, we will hear from a woman who actually got laid off as a result of her hustle.

Her name is Tela Holcomb, she is a stocks and options trader, investor and serial entrepreneur. In her own words, she’s financially free and living a life she loves!

But, it wasn’t always that way. Like many of us, she had to side hustle, and was dependent on her 9 to 5 to pay the bills. And although she got paid very well it just… her heart wasn’t quite in it.

So in 2009, she started learning about trading stocks. She learned a system of trading and investing that had the potential of replacing her paycheck but didn't require her to be behind a computer 8 hours a day. But then, she lost her job. So she got to focused on replacing that income. On today’s episode, she will share how she traded her 9 to 5 and how you can too.

Charreah K. Jackson joins me in the guest chair today to discuss how to thrive in your career and side hustle (without getting fired). Charreah and I first crossed paths in NYC when we were both recent grads, trying to make our way in the crazy world of media. She was always super supportive of other women, always willing to share her knowledge and resources with me and that’s why I have always routed for her. When you see someone who you knew “back when” it’s truly so inspiring to know how far they’ve come and how much more they are capable of and how they are going to keep taking the world by storm.

Charreah is an international speaker, coach and you may know her best for her role as ESSENCE Senior Editor, empowering the brand's global audience of 13 million. She’s been featured on CNN, The CW, ABC News, Fortune and TIME and if you saw the movie Girls Trip, you definitely saw a cameo of Charreah on the big screen. She’s also earned a Hearst Award in journalism and has interviewed newsmakers such as Vice President Joe Biden, Kerry Washington and Hillary Clinton.

Charreah is the author of Boss Bride: The Powerful Woman's Playbook for Love & Success, which was just released this week. As a certified family life educator and coach, Charreah speaks on tapping into our personal power for success.

On today’s episode, Charreah reveals how her playbook for personal power has informed her champion side hustler life. We’ll get into how she maintains a high profile both personally and professionally, while keeping her job and herself happy.

On today’s episode, Charreah gets into:

  • How to thrive at work without sacrificing your personal goals
  • How to side hustle and not lose your day job
  • How to navigate writing your first book

Up until this year, the last quarter of every year always felt like the most stressful for me. This year is the first year that that's not the case for me. This year, I got better at getting things done, even under pressure. In this episode I’m sharing some of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started out side hustling and what I've learned from them.

It’s important that you understand where I and most successful side hustlers went wrong and what I did to turn it around.

These mistakes could have easily been avoided if I had only known how to create a realistic goals setting system. Now, I've mastered the "less talk, more hustle" approach, and it’s what has gotten me results.

I spend less time thinking and talking about what I'm going to do and more time actually doing it.

I learned to cut out all the fluff that makes you FEEL like you're doing something (to-do lists, buying fancy planners, well organized trello boards) and get down to business.

By making these mistakes, I also learned some key lessons as to why most side hustlers aren’t making the progress they anticipated. You’re probably not accomplishing your goal, because you bit off too much or not taking action because you want everything to be perfect and are afraid of making a mistake.

If you want more guidance on how to actually get things done, consider learning my signature Goal Getter Action Plan. I can show you how to run a side business in 7 hours per week.

In this episode, I break down how you can quit stalling and make moves on your side hustle. Listen through to the end to get more info plus an early bird discount code to my signature Goal Getter Action Plan for just $27.

Today’s REWIND guest is Nailah Ellis-Brown. I first heard about Nailah from my roommates, Nydia and Stefanie at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

They supported her business as part of the MBAs Across America program that they participated in (and you’ll hear more about this in the episode).

I’ve been fascinated by Nailah every since. A Black Woman from Detroit with Jamaican roots, Ellis-Brown has made a name for herself as part of the Detroit manufacturing renaissance. Her distinctive hibiscus Ellis Island Tea, based on a family recipe and bottled in an urban 4,000 square foot plant, has expanded sales into six airports and locations across 12 Midwestern states along with shelf space in regional retailer Meijer, Whole Foods and most recently Sam Club stores.

She’s been named one of the Forbes 30 Under 30, has been featured on MSNBC for a small business makeover, and she’s only getting started.

Her plan was to go to school, work on wall street then quit and be an entrepreneur. But when she realized the student loan hustle, she wanted no parts of it.

On today’s episode, Nailah gets into:

  • How she’s been able to brew and bottle a recipe steeped in family tradition
  • How she went from selling out of her trunk to selling in Sam’s clb
  • Learning the science behind her
  • How she took a leap of faith and started over from scratch
  • How investing in herself and her business led to big rewards in major brand partnership
  • Plus how she’s continuing to grow her brand

On this REWIND edition of Side Hustle Pro, I share my experience "meeting" Michelle Obama, launching the newest cohort of my Podcast Moguls training program, then get into this best of edition of Side Hustle Pro with Myleik Teele.

Myleik has revolutionized the way women address their curly hair needs. As the founder of curlBOX, an exclusive monthly subscription box full of amazing products, she has garnered partnerships with Procter & Gamble, Carol’s Daughter, Walmart, Target, SheaMoisture and more.

Before creating curlBOX, Myleik honed her talents for a decade in public relations, working with brands such as The Grammy Awards, American Idol and Nike, as well as music artists like the late Prince. Now, as the creator of the premier hair sampling box, she has developed a loyal following of savvy women. She is very much like a virtual big sister, dishing out spot on entrepreneurial advice.

We all have our thing that #MyTaughtUs, but one thing I learned from her, is to intentionally put myself in the places and spaces to meet the people I want to connect with. This episode felt more like a heart to heart, an opportunity to really connect with a mentor in my head.

On Today's show, Myleik shares:

  1. What led her to be an entrepreneur
  2. The most surprising part of starting curlBOX
  3. How we as entrepreneurs can push past the need for approval

It’s Nicaila here with another special REWIND edition of Side Hustle Pro.

Take a listen to this best of episode with Courtney Sanders. This is one of my favorite episodes because Courtney is so thorough! She is an entrepreneur who started making money online by packaging her expertise in productivity systems and goal achievement and has impacted thousands of people.

But, even though she was starting to make 4 then 5 figures monthly in her business, she didn’t just quit her job. She planned it out, she was prepared and she really set a high standard for herself of what she needed to achieve before she would allow herself to quit.

So Courtney’s episode is one that I came back to many, many times in 2017. I would literally re-listen to it over and over again as I prepared to leave my job. 1) Because it was like talking to a life coach and 2) It was a reminder that I could not just quit impulsively and expect success, I needed to establish a plan.

In this this episode, Courtney breaks down:

  • The inspiration for Think And Grow Chick and when she realized she could help other women think and grow into their best selves
  • How she grew her company into a profitable business
  • How she juggles her side hustle with her full time job
  • Financial wisdom she has learned along the way
  • When she knew it was time to take her side hustle to the next level

It's a special REWIND edition of Side Hustle Pro. Side Hustle Pro is on a brief hiatus in May and I’ll be back in June with fresh new episodes. I can assure you, this is no vacation for me. Behind the scenes I am cooking up something great. In the meantime, I’ll be checking in each week with a quick update at the top of each REWIND episode. So you’ll still here from me.

Now take a listen to this best of episode with Maya Elious. Maya is the first ever coach that I purchased an online course from and I continue to benefit from her teachings. Since this episode, it’s been amazing to watch her evolve even further with her content strategy, placing a particular focus on helping other coaches and consultants to use the power of content to make an impact with their brand.

This is one that I re-listen to when I need to recenter and refocus.

On this episode, Maya shares:

  • Her journey from designing MySpace pages to leaving college to become an entrepreneur
  • How she earns money today as a content strategist and coach
  • Her most simple sales funnel that anyone can replicate
  • The common misconceptions about being a coach or course instructor
  • Her number one pro tip for building an audience that craves your content
